Semax and Selank — nootropic peptides under study

Two peptides created in Russia. A plain explanation of how Semax and Selank differ and what researchers are testing about them.

Dieser Artikel ist derzeit nur auf Englisch verfügbar. Die deutsche Fassung folgt.

Semax and Selank are two peptides — short chains of amino acids, tiny fragments resembling pieces of protein. Both were created in laboratories in Russia. Researchers study them to see how they affect brain function (memory, focus) and the nervous system.

Semax

Semax was derived from a fragment of a natural hormone (called ACTH), but it no longer acts as a hormone itself. Studies examine whether it can protect nerve cells and whether it affects the proteins that help neurons grow and survive (researchers call them BDNF and NGF).

Selank

Selank is a synthetic counterpart of a natural molecule called tuftsin. Research focuses on whether it can reduce anxiety and how it interacts with the immune system — so far only under laboratory conditions, in experimental models.

Acetylated forms

There are variants of these peptides (called N-acetyl Semax and N-acetyl Selank) with a small chemical change. Studies describe them as more stable — they break down more slowly in the body.
